Going out of town or on vacation?

blog_vacation2 Take a little time out before you leave to ensure your home is
secure and possessions are safe when you come back:

  • Hire a house sitter- can combine with a pet sitter if you have an approved pet at your rental property- and will save you kennel fees. This is also highly recommended so that they can report any leaks or other major maintenance issues that could arise in the house while you are gone. You are responsible for reporting maintenance items to us as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the owner’s asset- if you do not because you are out of town and nobody is checking on the property, you could be held financially liable for some or all of the damage that occurs.
  • Pause the mail service if you are going to be gone for longer than 3 days so that your mailbox doesn’t start to overflow.
  • Stop Newspaper delivery or have your neighbor collect your newspaper, packages and advertisements left at your house while you are gone so they don’t pile up.
  • Arrange for lawn care- don’t let uncut grass or untrimmed bushes make your home look neglected. Hire someone to do these chores in your absence, or see if your house sitter will include in their services.
  • Put out the trash cans on the designated day- have a neighbor, friend or house sitter put out your trash can on garbage day and make sure that they are not left out once they are emptied.
  • Invest in light timers- make the house look lived in while you are gone.
  • Turn the key and lock up- double check your house before you leave and make sure ALL windows and doors are locked.
  • Don’t post about your trip on social media until you are back home. You don’t want the world to know that you are 500+ miles away from your house.
  • Unplug your electronics before you leave. Disconnect power to your most frequently used items: computer, coffee pot, television, and chargers. It will save you money and keep you from worrying that you left them on.
  • Stow away car electronics if parking at the airport- make sure no GPS or other valuables are visible in the windows.
  • Keep your shades or curtains in the house drawn while you are gone.
  • Put valuables at home in a safety deposit box.
  • Don’t leave spare keys outdoors
  • Tell the neighbors (and your property management company) when you will be out of town.
  • Keep a copy of all serial numbers on valuables with a copy your Rental Insurance policy.
